The Royal Observatory is the historic source of the Prime Meridian of the World, 0° longitude, which marks the divide between the eastern and western hemispheres.
The reverse design by Henry Gray depicts several scientific elements that have contributed to some of the historic discoveries made by the Royal Observatory. While the edge inscription ‘PERFECTING THE ART OF NAVIGATION’, is taken from the Royal Warrant signed by Charles II in March 1675
